RW Antifreeze for Concrete

  • The hydration of cement is an exothermic reaction, and it is optimal for this process to occur between 10°C and 25°C over a period of 28 days. However, the initial setting of concrete at 20°C typically takes around 12 hours. To prevent concrete from freezing in cold weather, it is essential to reduce the initial setting time from 12 hours to approximately 3 to 5 hours. This is achieved using RW Antifreeze, a product compliant with ASTM C494 standards. RW Antifreeze is available in both powder and liquid forms.
  • Packaging: Available in 20-kilogram bags.

Applications:
– Preventing Water Freezing: Ideal for concrete exposed to severe cold conditions.
– Accelerating Initial Setting: Reduces the risk of damage caused by rapid temperature changes.
– Lowering Freezing Point: Maintains concrete fluidity in cold weather.
– Cold Weather Repairs: Suitable for repair work in freezing conditions.

Benefits:
– Cold Weather Concreting: Enables concrete pouring at temperatures ranging from +5°C to -15°C.
– Accelerated Hydration: Speeds up the reaction of silicates in cement, which is typically slowed by the deposition of calcium hydroxide layers. The heat generated aids in faster setting and mitigates risks associated with rapid temperature drops.
– Water Reduction: Reduces water content by up to 10% without compromising workability, enhancing the density and durability of fresh and hardened concrete against freeze-thaw cycles.
– Non-Corrosive: Free from chloride and nitrate, ensuring no harm to reinforcement or concrete. Compatible with all types of cement.

Dosage:
Refer to the table below for dosage based on cement weight:

| Temperature Range | Cement Grade 300 | Cement Grade 350 | Cement Grade 400 |
|——————–|——————|——————|——————|
| +5°C to 0°C | 2% | 1.5% | 1% |
| 0°C to -5°C | 2.5% | 2% | 1.5% |
| -5°C to -10°C | 3% | 2.5% | 2% |

*Note: According to regulations, concrete pouring should ideally be halted in temperatures below -10°C.*

Application Method:
Add the required amount of RW Antifreeze to the mixer, ensure thorough mixing, and proceed with concrete pouring.

Cold Weather Concreting Tips:
1. Remove water, snow, and ice from formwork and reinforcement surfaces.
2. Preheat formwork and reinforcement to above 0°C if possible.
3. Maintain concrete temperature between 4°C and 6°C.
4. Use appropriate insulation to retain heat in the concrete.
5. If RW Antifreeze freezes at very low temperatures, thaw it in a warm environment. Avoid direct heating.
6. If necessary, warm aggregates and mixing water, and use insulation to prevent heat loss in freshly poured concrete.
7. Ensure no part of the concrete drops below +5°C during pouring, as this halts the chemical activity of cement hydration, affecting setting and strength development.
